Eats

There is an old pharmacy on Main Street (its next-door twin was turned into a gallery in the past year or so, and I still can’t bear to look in) where you can get a good frappe and sit on a swivel stool and hear someone talk about someone else.

Brother Hood: standard greasy spoon fare, good burgers and draft beer.

Centre Street Bistro: tasty new American fare. Poached eggs and sweet potato cake with grits is especially good for breakfast, and the curried chicken soup is great for lunch.

Black Eyed Susans: standard breakfast fare with jack daniels butter.

The Fog Café: standard greasy spoon, reasonably priced.

Straight Wharf: on a pretty wharf, good dinner, they know what to do with fish.

The Bean: for your coffee fix, and if you need a bar of chocolate.

The Languedoc: tasty heavy French fare, sit down in the café and have the same food for less jing (brunch and dinner).

Out of town proper:

Pi pizza: thin crust numbers, not cheap but tasty.

The Downy Flake: my favorite greasy spoon on the island. Satisfying salty fried food, deli coffee to drown whatever needs drowning. Chocolate glazed doughnuts to send your blood sugar skyrocketing. And waitresses that haven’t changed a lick in 30 years. Richard Russo would do well to hang out here for a winter.
